1. BackgroundIn recent years, topics of ageing and health has been emerged not only in the developed countries but also the developing countries, where infectious diseases are still ongoing problems. In each year, the population over 65 increases 9 million worldwide, and it is estimated that 80% of ageing population would be in the developing countries (as shown in the figure). Meanwhile, in Japan, new nurse-care insurance system will start in 2000.
In this regard, ACIH started a new project on "Healthy Ageing". The purpose of the project is to promote health and well-being throughout lifespan, thus ensuring "Healthy Ageing" both physically and mentally.

The total of 20 health and medical experts visited WHO, other institutions for aged, Geriatric hospitals and residential homes etc. to exchange ideas. Also, ACIH held the symposiums to report this ACIH study course 1999 to the public and to discuss Healthy Ageing.
